R.E.S.I.L.I.E.N.C.E
RESILIENCE – It’s a powerful word …
When faced with adversity we have choices. Choices through every decision, reaction, and interaction we have with others. The definition of resilience states it is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. I personally believe that it is possible to thrive and not just survive adverse situations we may face in our lives. First, however, we must believe we have choices. Since we can choose what we believe, we also have the power within to choose how we respond. Read further to see how R.e.s.l.i.e.n.c.e (redefined) can hopefully inspire you to think about the possibilities within your own life.
Rebound – First and foremost believe you will make it through whatever challenge you are facing. You may not know how or when, just that you will. Repeat to yourself frequently throughout the day - “I am going to (fill in the blank)” (succeed, thrive, make it through the day, etc.)
Emotion – Acknowledge your emotions. Let them surface and address them without judging them good or bad. They are a part of being human. Learn to channel the energy of emotion to benefit you in the choices you make that support your goal of moving yourself forward.
Strength – You have what it takes to deal with any situation. Think about all the other times in your life when you faced adversity. Now ask - how did you make it through? Reflect on what you already have deep within yourself that helped you cope before and believe you can tap that reservoir of strength again.
Innovate – When faced with adversity, it can be a time to think innovatively. Challenge yourself to think outside the box, beyond what feels comfortable, and without judgment. Something new and different is ahead in your life if you can open your mind to the possibilities.
Love – Love outwardly. Allow others to get close to you to help you through your situation. This may mean you share your vulnerability. Practice good self-care and believe you will emerge stronger than you ever imagined. Love inwardly. Speak positively to yourself and focus on what you are grateful for, allowing you to shift your thoughts in a more supportive manner.
Inspire – Inspire others. We can all think about someone possibly dealing with a situation even more challenging than our own. Your thoughts, actions and choices can inspire others. Others just may be watching and learn something from your lead.
Energy – We all have a mixture of catabolic and anabolic energy. Catabolic energy drains us and is associated with stress in our lives. Tap into your anabolic energy to help lift, support, and guide you through your current circumstances. Take a moment to discover what has changed in the way you respond or react to issues and how much more resilient you are becoming.
Normalize – As you put some distance from the challenge you face, you will begin to operate in your new paradigm of what is normal. Life will continue to test your definition of normal, and every time you make it through a new challenge you become more resilient, able to stretch and tap into the strength you have acquired to tackle the new challenges ahead.
Challenge – Challenge your assumptions, your beliefs, your expectations. Let the day flow naturally with non-judgment. This shift in mindset takes practice and is possible. You might just invite options into your life you would have dismissed previously or maybe not even seen.
Excel – If you truly believe you would make it through this time in your life, then you can also believe the future is looking brighter. You have a chance, and the choice, to excel as you explore this next part of your personal journey.
